Get Ready to Explore with Bird Destinations

Welcome to Angola

Angola, long overlooked as a birding destination due to its turbulent past, has emerged as one of Africa’s most exciting frontiers for adventurous birders. Home to over 900 bird species, including more than a dozen endemics, Angola offers a spectacular mix of habitats—from coastal wetlands and Baobab-studded savannas to misty montane forests and lush river valleys. Our expertly guided 14-day tour will take you on a loop through the country's most biologically rich and scenically stunning regions, all with the aim of observing Angola’s remarkable avifauna.

We begin in the capital city of Luanda, where we’ll shake off jet lag and explore the nearby Kissama National Park, home to the striking Red-crested Turaco and abundant wetland species. From there, we head south to the arid plains and escarpment forests near Lubango, where the endemic Angola Cave Chat and Swierstra's Francolin await. The scenic Tundavala Gap provides not only breathtaking views but also the chance to spot the elusive Angola Slaty Flycatcher and Braun’s Bushshrike.

As we loop northward through the Kumbira Forest and Mount Moco—Angola’s highest peak and a hotspot for endemics—we’ll be scanning for Gabela Akalat, Pulitzer's Longbill, and Monteiro's Bushshrike. Days will be filled with expertly paced birding walks and vehicle-based excursions, while evenings will offer camaraderie, local cuisine, and species checklists under the stars.

Our final stretch brings us into the lush northern province of Uige, where rainforest species like the Red-fronted Parrot and Yellow-billed Barbet add color and variety to our growing list. Throughout the journey, our accommodations range from comfortable guesthouses to cozy bush lodges, with a strong focus on eco-conscious travel and supporting local conservation.

This tour is best suited for moderately active birders eager to explore a lesser-known region packed with biological treasure. With the help of experienced guides, skilled drivers, and local ornithologists, we aim to tally over 350 bird species, including nearly all of Angola’s endemics, along with some spectacular mammals and reptiles along the way. Join us for an unforgettable birding journey into one of Africa’s final frontiers.
